Shortly after Coal died, a large grey cat started making his appearances in the early mornings outside our bedroom window. We'd look out and there he'd be, asleep on the cover of our hottub. After a couple of weeks, Jillian invited him to fill the cat-shaped hole in her heart. We called our new cat "Caldera", or "Cal", after the brand name of our Caldera Spa hottub.
Several weeks after Cal joined our family, one of our friends recognized him, and the story of his past began to unravel. Cal had been a transient, known as "Squeekers", at theVolcano Rainforest Retreat. When the owners there grew tired of him, and were in the process of transporting him to the Hilo Humane Society, Cat Killam happened by and offered to adopt him. At this point Cal was renamed "Nikky" and went to live in the Enchanted Forest with Cat. One day Nikky wandered from the forest, and ended up at Ohia Cottages, where he was identified via his collar ID and returned. The next time Nikky left the forest, he left behind his collar, and months later he was at our house. We called Cat Killam to report him found, and she said we could keep him if we'd like.
Cal seems to have ceased his wanderings, and settled in to retirement mode. He purrs magnificently, but exerts himself at little else.
