Workday:  On Thursday, Friday and Saturday many folks – teachers, staff, students, parents, Marvin and other community members - assembled here at the school for the next phase of the preparation for the playground.  Many iron relics and large slabs of concrete were removed and hauled away.  Much clearing was accomplished behind the two middle school tents and in back of Miss Star’s room, and a dangerous, rusty fence was replaced.  To all of you, we are very grateful, ( at one point I counted 29, but many more came for short periods of time, or dropped off food, etc.).  It was remarkable…..THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!

Board Election:  Enclosed with this week’s Info Flo packet are ballots for the election of representatives to the VSAS Board of Directors, our school’s governing body.  This year we will be electing four parent representatives and one alternate parent representative along with one community representative.  Once elected, these folks will join the other already seated members of the board – teacher, staff, administration and student representatives-- bringing the total number of board members to 15.

The role of the parent reps is to bring before the board the ideas and concerns of parents.  They will also serve on various committees and help out in many ways around the school.   The role of the community representative is to be the voice for the greater Volcano community and to encourage communication and cooperation between VSAS and the Volcano community.

If you would like more details on the selection of board members and the structure of our school’s governing body, visit the VSAS website.

I have served on the nominating committee for several years and know that it is frequently a challenge to find parents or community members who have the time and willingness to serve as board members.  The tasks before the board present challenges as we plan for our fifth year of operation, yet the rewards are great. This year we have found five parents willing to serve as parent reps. This means that we can not only fill the four vacant seats, but also can have an alternate representative.  We also have one incumbent community rep willing to serve a second term.

All parents/guardians may vote for the parent reps.  All members of the Volcano community may vote for the community rep.   Please vote and make sure your ballots are back at school by December 1.  You can send your ballots back to school in the Info Flo packet, or drop them off at the office.

The next board meeting will be December 2 at 5:30 in Mr. Lawrence’s tent.  New board members will be seated.  All regular board meeting are open and you are welcome to attend.
