Mrs.
Hiestand’s math and 5th grade class:
Homework is posted on her classroom website. This can be accessed from the Volcano School website (see link below)
Federal
Survey cards: These are included in some, but
not all folders. Please fill out and
get back to me ASAP. Very important for
Federal funding. Peggy
Free and
reduced lunches: If you think that you are
entitled to free or reduced lunches and do not find an approval in your folder
today, please let me know before Sept. 10. Those who already have verification
from the state are automatically entitled to the free lunches.
KTA’s
Kokua I Na Kula Program: Shop at
KTA and earn points for our school. Our number
is 66. Last year you all helped us earn $622.14.
More details at the store.
URGENT: All those who haven’t turned in your initial papers
(especially lunch applications, emergency cards and field trip permission
slips) I need them ASAP.
Foote, Souza, Mainaaupo, and Grey are the ones I still need.
Morning drop-off:
All students need to be dropped
off at the multipurpose room. Middle-school students can then sign in and walk
over to the bubble. (If middle-school students are dropped off directly at the
bubble it causes traffic congestion, plus the students often forget to sign
in.)
Afternoon
pickup:
Parking is very tight at the
school, as we all know. Sometimes this leads people to park out on the road
when picking up their children. If at all possible, drive through and don't
park on the road. If for some reason you absolutely must park on the road,
please park on the school side, not across the road. That stretch of road
is a blind corner, and traffic coming off of Volcano highway tends to be way
too fast. There have already been several close calls!
Board meeting:
There will be a Volcano school
board meeting this Thursday at 4:30 in the multipurpose room. For those
unfamiliar with how charter schools operate, the local school board makes all
major decisions about hiring, expenditures, curriculum and so on. Visitors are
very welcome! The board is comprised of six parent representatives, two
community representatives, two teacher representatives, the school director, a
staff representative and a student representative.
Be sure and call if your child is not coming to school
Hawaii
state law requires that all students attend either a public or private school,
and when the number of unexcused absences reaches 20, the school is legally required
to notify Family Court. Excused absences are: sickness; any time out with a
doctor’s note; travel, when schoolwork is taken along or accomplished in
conjunction with it; or travel for illness or death in the family. You must
either call or send a note in order for any absence to be excused.
Unexcused absences are, among others: birthdays; sleeping in; suspended from
school; “had to go shopping;” “No clean clothes;” “Don’t want to come,” travel
for holiday, etc..
Cards:
Pokkemon, Yu-gi-oh, magic cards etc. ARE allowed at school, but
students must assume complete responsibility for them. Last year there were a
number of thefts.
Cell phone reminder:
The school's recently-adopted policy regarding cell phones is that they
are allowed on campus, but ONLY with a signed note from the parent on file in
the office, and they must be kept off and out of sight while at school. In
other words they are only for after-school use.
