Friday Performance!
This Friday, both at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. our K-1-2 classes will perform Treasures Great and Small, musical theater celebrating some of the small and great treasures of Hawaii. Performances will be at the Niaulani administrative buildings of the Volcano Art Center located on Old Volcano Road between the VSAS campus and the post office.
The 10 a.m. performance is primarily for other classes while the 6 p.m. performance is primarily for family and community, but anyone is welcome to attend either performance. Join us for this special event. Questions: Dina, 967-8151.

Board Meeting
There will be a VSAS board of directors meeting this Thursday, May 26, at 6 p.m. in Mr. Lawrence’s tent. On the agenda are a report from the Facilities Committee, the setting of summer calendar items, and a look toward a campus book fair in the fall, among many other items. Meetings are held the second and fourth Thursdays of each month and, as
always, are open to everyone. Questions: Dina, 967-8151.

Past due bills: We still have some outstanding bills for bus and lunch for April.  I would like to clear the books for that month before beginning on May.  Please?  Please?  Thanks, Peggy

Graduation Raffle:  Congratulations to the winner of our Ross Gift Basket, Nana Manuel, parent of 8th grade student, Ruanne Manuel.  Jackson Halford drew the winning ticket from over 160 participants.  Thanks to all those who bought tickets. The 8th grade graduating class raised over $120 for their graduation.

888 Cans and plastic bottles = $49.40!  Totals to date: 3737 items and $209.35. By the end of this month, we will have doubled the original challenge of $112.  Proceeds will go toward scholarships for Big Island excursions and activities and will be awarded at the discretion of the teachers.  Thank you all: we’ll continue the collections this summer outside the MP Room.

Keep in touch online: There is now an e-mail "community" just for Hawaii charter schools. To signup, send an e-mail to pirsig@hawaii.rr.com. It's free, and one can unsubscribe any time. The group is spam-free and contents range from announcements and media links to questions and discussions.

Help needed: There are many facilities projects this summer. The school has gotten by through the years with many thousands of hours of donated labor, and we're now at a point where an especially big push is needed. The good news is that the campus will soon be ours (as the primary lessee); the bad news is the state legislature still doesn't fund charter school facilities. So we have to do it ourselves, as best we can, with what limited funds we can scrape, beg, borrow, or fund-raise.

For starters we have a pile of steel -- a used greenhouse frame – that needs rust removal and painting prior to erecting; classrooms that need painting; middle-school classrooms going up in July or August; Tibouchina clearing, etc. -- you get the picture. If you have a large block of time over a limited period or just a few hours here and there, every bit will help. Please contact Ted (or Dr. Rizor) at the school, or at VSAS-Admin.com.  Especially helpful would be managers for particular projects -- someone to coordinate and oversee all the details.

Summer Fun:  Hurry, registration deadline for Summer Fun is May 31st.  Late registration will be offered for an additional fee of $10.  Spread the word to family and friends – you do not need to be a VSAS student to participate.  Also, you do not have to register for the entire 6 weeks.  Scholarships and sibling discounts are still available.  We have lots of fun activities planned; your choice of dance or music jam, rhythm & movement (otherwise known as fun with buckets and sticks), art & science crafts, outings to park and beyond, games, and more!  Plus, there will be plenty of free playtime so come have a super fun summer with your friends!  For more information or to register call 968-1296 or 345-9770 or see Ms. Kalima or Miss Tricia.

For Ages 13-17
: Not sure what to do this summer?  How about applying for an internship with Volcano School Summer Fun?  The Camp will run from June 20-July 29, Monday – Friday, 8 am until 4 pm. However, you may apply to work any number of days or hours.  This would be a great opportunity to get some experience and have fun at the same time!  It is not necessary to be a VSAS student to apply for an internship.  If you’re interested, see Ms. Kalima or Miss Tricia or give us a call at 968-1296 or 345-9770.

Aloha Students and parents from Tanta Rosa:  Here are a few examples of how goal setting works in life.  Nicolyn’s prayer to the gods:   Oh, Artimus, bravest of all, give me speed and aim like your arrows for the discus, javelin and sprints so I may win for you.  Victoria Hall: Oh, Athena, wisest of all, let me throw the javelin far and beautiful.  Jackson Halford: Oh, Artimus, please give me the swiftness to throw the javelin many yards and give me everything you’ve got to lead us to victory and fame. Tanta Rosa.
P.S.  Please turn in your tunics, sashes and ribbons.

Next-to-the-last Infoflo:  The 37th Info Flo will be distributed next week on the 31st.   In it will be the lunch and bus bills through the 27th of May.  It will also include an estimated amount for the last 6 days of school.  If there is a discrepancy, we can settle up over the summer.  I need to get all the owed monies in before that last week and I would appreciate your help.

Last Infoflo:  This will be distributed on June 7th and will contain the no-school days calendar and supply lists for next year.
