Grant from Rotary Club: Volcano School is receiving a literacy grant for $23,691.00 from the Rotary International Foundation. A big thank you goes to the Rotary Club of Volcano, the Rotary Clubs of Hilo, Hilo Bay, South Hilo, and the Rotary Club of Kojimachi (Tokyo) Japan.  Thank you to Diane Morgado, president of the Rotary Club of Volcano who wrote and followed up on the grant and to Xanthe Smith who made the grant possible
by coordinating the contribution from the club in Japan.

Eighth Grade Parents:  Reminder: The deadline to turn in Geographic Exception requests for your student to attend a high school other than the school for their residence area is MARCH 1.  Please refer to the information packet, with a copy of the form, which was sent with your student in January.  If you need this packet again, please call Lora (SSC) @ 985-8537

Afterschool Dance Group Extra Rehearsals
In preparation for Ho'ike Ma'u a Ma'u, there will be a special practice today until 4:00 and a dress rehearsal on Thursday until 4:30.  Please refer to the note sent home previously for more details.

Aloha Parents:  Feb. 25th is  Kamehameha School’s Ho’iki Ma’u Ma’u:  IMPORTANT: If your child
has a Volcano School T-shirt, please have them wear  them to the performance.  We are short on our supply.
The opening ceremony  will be held at 8:00 am in the Koai’a Gym.  We are expected to be there.  We will be performing in the Keawe Dining Hall.  Time will be announced.  This is a community building event and we have been asked to stay and enjoy the concerts, and participate in the closing ceremony at 12:00.  Please provide snacks for the performers; there will be no food concession this year.  There are drinking fountains located on campus for water.  Mahalo! Reminder: Hawaii State Assessment in Reading and Math:  From March 1 to April 13, all students in 3rd through 8th grades will be completing 10 test sessions. Parents of Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders: Your student is now in rehearsal for community presentations set for April 7 and 9.
”Memoir of a Water Droplet”, a musical production about our island’s water cycle, will be presented both at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on April 7 in the Great Room at Niaulani, the Volcano Art Center’s administrative offices near the VSAS campus. The 10 a.m. showing is primarily for other VSAS students. The 6 p.m. evening performance is for families and community.
On Sunday, April 9 at 5 p.m., an abbreviated version of the production will be presented at Cooper Center as part of the VSAS annual community meeting.
More specific information will be available later. Please mark your calendars now and plan to support your child in this creative learning activity. Questions? Dina Kageler, 967-8151.

Board Meeting Thursday: Dr. Rizor will address the board with the annual State of the School report at the next board meeting this Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. in Ms. Morrison's tent. As always, everyone is welcome to attend.

Wal-Mart’s Teacher of the Year Nominations deadline is Friday, February 24.  Please complete and cut out the form (Peggy has it), then drop it in the box located just inside the store’s main entrance.  Let’s help give our VSAS teachers the recognition they deserve!  (local winner may apply for the state and national award too!)

Art After School with Paul Lackner

Grades 2 & up
Wednesdays 1:00 – 2:30
Beginning Wednesday, March 1st
$60 for 8 weeks (which includes materials)
Scholarships are available.
In this session, students will begin to design with color and will continue basic draftsmanship development using drawing exercises. Also they will be helping design and produce the sets for the upcoming middle school plays.  There are no prerequisites. All welcome. 

3 Classes:  Ballet, Acro Jazz/Hip Hop, & Polynesian Fire Twirling
