Peer Mediators Begin
VSAS’s first peer mediators are on the job!  Mrs. Heistand’s 5th grade class has been studying conflict resolution skills since August, and a committed group of 7 students have elected to serve as our school’s first peer mediators.  The students are: Autumn Brooks, Clara Cellini, JD Dockstader, Jebril Gutierrez, Joshua Halemano, Samantha Smith, and Derrick Velez.   They are working to use mediation skills to help fellow students resolve arguments and disagreements that take place in school.  In addition to being on duty during lunch and recess, the students also meet with the counselor weekly to continue to practice their skills and to support one another in being positive role models at VSAS.
This is a big responsibility they have taken on and we are very excited by their commitment.  Mahalo to Mrs. Heistand for initiating the idea of having peer mediators at VSAS, and for arranging class time for her students to learn and practice
the skills.                Submitted by:  Kim Miller, Counselor

Food Drive Success
Mahalo to all of our staff and families who brought in canned goods and hygiene products for the National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week Food Drive.  We collected 5 large boxes of food and a large box of hygiene products that were picked up by staff from the Office of Homeless Services for distribution to families in need.  Members of the VSAS Aloha Club made posters and spoke with classes to let students and families know about the drive.  Our school’s participation was much appreciated by the Office of Homeless Services.

The Friends of Volcano School of Arts & Sciences is seeking two new board members.

Friends of VSAS is a 501(c)3 nonprofit which functions as a support organization for the school. Currently it holds equity such as the new classroom buildings, and is the official applicant for grants requiring nonprofit status. Meetings are held at least four times per year.

Contact David Rizor, Jim MataBishop or Lora Gale if interested, or if you know someone else who might be.
