Identification

Families in our community have been and will continue to be informed about The Volcano School in a variety of ways.

- Announcements and timely reports regarding school planning have been placed in the monthly Volcano Community Association newsletter.

- A charter school suggestion box has been installed at the community center.

- Community open forums have been held to answer questions, solicit ideas and opinions and to assess enrollment interest.

- The public liaison officer maintains an extended email network of some sixty households and sends out timely community updates.

- Information booths have been set up at community special events such as the 4th of July festivities.

- Information tables have been set at regular community gatherings such as the weekly Sunday farmers market at the community center

After the granting of charter status, other means of information dispersal and recruiting are planned:

- Direct mail to post office boxes in Volcano and Hawaii National Park, zip codes 96785 and 96718

- Memos through employers to all staff of all Park related agencies such as Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Kilauea Military Camp, Fish and Wildlife Service, the Volcano Art Center, etc.

- Flyers on local bulletin boards

- Information tables at community stores

- Roadside information dispersal and recruiting, especially targeting the more remote subdivisions of the Volcano community

- Press releases to community newsletters, island newspapers and local radio stations

- Word of mouth among friends, family and school 'ohana

- A large sign at the school facility site, featuring the information "Home of the Volcano School of Arts & Sciences, Opening Fall 2001" and contact information.

Enrollment Procedures

The Volcano School of Arts & Sciences will inform the community of its public school status and have a fair and open admissions process. The school will recruit in a manner that does not discriminate against students of a particular race, color, national origin, or sex, or students with disabilities.

Should enrollment requests exceed space available a lottery will be held including all children who apply as of the application closing date. Names will be drawn by grade level. A wait list will be established by drawing names and numbering them in order of their place in the draw. If space becomes available during the year, names on the wait list will be contacted.

Pursuant to the law, children of the founders of the school will be exempt from the lottery. In the first year of operation, siblings of children whose names are drawn in the lottery will automatically be accepted. In subsequent years, siblings of students already attending the school will also be exempt from the lottery.
